Heidi is a lucky girl althought that is difficult to believe since she doesn’t know her birthday, her father, or a lot about her mother. She lives with her mother who has brain damage. Since her mother can’t really tell her a lot about her own life or her mother’s life, Heidi has many questions to which she would like answers. One way Heidi is lucky is that her neighbor Bernadette, an intriguing character, has helped Heidi take care of herself and her mother since she was a baby. Another way Heidi is lucky is with the slots. When they are in emergency situations, and only then, Bernadette sends Heidi to play the slots. In fact, Heidi is lucky enough to call heads/tails correctly in a coin flip ten out of ten times. Finding a camera in her mother’s things also proves to be lucky because it gives some clues to her mother but not enough to answer Heidi’s questions. Will Heidi’s luck continue as she goes on a quest to find answers, or is Heidi’s luck about to disappear?

Redwall is another book that has been a favorite for years. I was a bit apprehensive because the main character, Matthias, is a mouse. This book, however, has a lot of action. It reminded me of the way I felt about Hawksong being a book I enjoyed even though I am always hesitant when animals are the main characters. Because of the suspense I kept reading to see if Matthias would be successful in his endeavor.

Matthias is a mouse at Redwall Abbey and is instrumental in protecting the Abbey and other animals from Cluny the Scourge, a rat. He needs to find the sword of Martin the Warrior in order to be a threat to Cluny. This task requires the help of many characters. Several battles and adventures occur as Matthias gains ground on Cluny, but loses family and friends in the process.
