Now You See It…

Wendy can’t see without her glasses. When a punk from the bus smashes her glasses, she decides to use a pair of sunglasses she found in her front yard. The glasses from her yard help her to see “dead people.” She sees “dead people.” She wears these glasses in school and notices the pretty girl, Tiffanie, in class is ugly in the glasses. Another person from class, Julian, helps her as she is sick with the glasses. She begins to wonder if Julian and Tiffanie are out to get her glasses. Maybe they know her secret about the glasses. Finally, Wendy realizes there is a parallel world as she visits her grandma in the nursing home. Actually she meets her grandma, Tiffanie, and Julian in the parallel world.
To be honest, the book was OK. It would have been better if I could get past the fact that this girl picked up sunglasses in her front yard that just happened to be the correct prescription and could see dead people. If you realize all that is part of the story and it is important to the plot, it is a good read. Oh, did I mention the little blue elf?

Mystery books and middle school readers is often a tricky combination. Students may come either as individuals interested in checking out a mystery book, or as a whole class where the next genre assignment is to read a mystery. And then the hunt begins.
Sunny, real name Sunflower, is caught up in the aftermath following the death of her older sister Jazz, real name Jasmine, in a fire in her New York apartment. To cope with the loss of Jazz, Sunny’s father has turned big-time to alcohol, and her mother has retreated into a depressive stupor. And Sunny has to cope with all of them, all while deciding if she is REALLY sorry her manipulative, controlling sister is gone.
