The Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

Tally is one of the “Uglies.” This will change when she turns sixteen. When she turns sixteen, she will turn into one of the “pretties.” Everyone does. While Tally is waiting to turn sixteen, she is involved with some tricks. During one of these adventures she meets Shay. Shay isn’t going to change to a pretty. This is amazing and absurd to Tally. Why doesn’t Shay want to turn to a pretty?

Tally and Shay become friends, but the day their sixteenth birthday, Shay disappears. Before Tally can change, she is told she must find and betray Shay. A difficult decision faces Tally, should she betray her best friend in order to be a pretty?
